Whilst this picture represents the arrival of my new Canon 550D, it also represents the last photo I shall take with my first DSLR, my Nikon D40.  It’s been a short ride with the Nikon, but the growing advances in video DSLR’s was a call I couldn’t ignore, and after much fretting over whether to go for the 550D or the mighty 7D, I decided to side with the former. I’ve only had a night with the Canon so far, and have shot a few bits and pieces in the house, and while I’m not going to posting those shots online, I already love filming with it, and can’t wait to see what I can get out of it in the coming days.  Expect a vimeo upload soon!!

I’ve been looking to build my own dolly rig for a while, and I think I’ve now found the one I’m going to start off with!  I came across this on Ikea Hacker and it’s the brain child of a chap who goes by the name Aalto. Utilising a wooden shelf section from Ikea’s Ivar range, you can get a pretty useful 2.25m length of dolly track for a tenner!  Obviously you have to have more than just track for a dolly set up though, so here’s a list of the rest of the ingredients that Aalto used:

- 12 Rollerblade wheels with ABEC 1 bearings

- 12 “L” Metal Plates

- A thick and heavy wooden plate (50x80x2.3cm)

- Some skateboard grip

- Bolts, nuts and rings

- A “GRUNDTAL” toilet paper dispenser for the handle!

Looks easy enough to throw into the back of a car too! Check his demo videos below to see how good the set up is!
